The whale shark is gentle, majestic and beautiful. It is the world’s biggest fish, and can measure as much as forty feet in length. Whale sharks’ mouths can be more than four feet wide – but worry not because they do not bite. They will swim up to your boat to see what is going on, they will glide along with you as you dive down to visit with them in their habitat. Whale sharks congregate at Gladden Spit just off Placienca’s coast, from March to June. They come because other fish come. During these months, more than twenty species of Caribbean fish come to spawn, and whale sharks eat their eggs.
